'The biggest challenge of any cinematographer is making the imagery fit together of a piece: that the whole film has a unity to it, and actually, that a shot doesn't stand out' - Roger Deakins

Above is a horror film I produced  as part of my Media BTEC coursework with my friend who also chose to study Media BTEC. The film revolves around a family who have just got back to find strange things happening around their house.  The family believes that their house is haunted by evil spirits, and soon finds out at the end.... Planning for this film took many weeks and we had to produce may waiver forms, risk assessments, shot lists and more.  Everything had to be completed to a top standard quality, which would be the same in actual productions. These were all tasks that were completed during class hours and study time outside of school.  The practical filmmaking took many hours on many weekends as well. The production was shot mainly using a GH5, and during winter time the lighting was not always the best which meant we had to redo several shots many times to not only get the correct angle but also to get the correct lighting. One fact about this specific producrion was that half way through production, we changed our core idea of the horror film, which therefore meant we had to redo all our previous paperwork to align with our new idea which we then had to execute. The film was shown at a school premier called 'Oscar's Night' and won best BTEC horror film. We both had to go on stage, collect our reward and make speeches about our film.

Other productions...

Below are a more productions which I have created. All these short films have taken so much effort to create and produce as I had to not only act in them, but also write, film and edit all of the short films. All the equipment I have used is mine, and has been fairly easy to buy and source. Dark Minds Series 2 has to be one of my best short films which have created. The production was shot in Southern France from July - August 2021. The production is a sequel to series 1 which was shot earlier on in the year. The film follows the return of the antagonist (Anonymous) and the protagonist (Jake). A new character is introduced and is called Anthony. Anthony has a mission and has asked Jake to help out. Both gear up and explore a vast open woods to find anything suspicious only to find out...

The short film was shot mainly on a Go Pro Hero 9 at 4k, with the occasional shots captured from an iPhone XR.  The production was then edited on iMovie. It took several weeks to edit, as there were many shots which needed to not only be cut down, but also colour corrected to look the best for the film. â€‹

My favourite scene from this short film is definitely the chlorine box hit scene. In this scene Jake is being chased and ends up at the pool house, where he hears Anonymous following after him so he creeps around to the back of the pool house to hide from him. After much thought, Jake builds up the courage to lift up the chlorine box, when he hears Anonymous running around the other side. Anonymous is hit by the chlorine box in the face and that is when the fight breaks out.  The reason why I love this scene so much is there is so much tension and suspense in the scene, which is a result of the context of the scene but also due to the build in tension of music and the sound effects. All of which made the scene so tense and exiting to watch. The particular scene took many hours to edit as the jump scare in the music had to be perfectly aligned with the chlorine box hitting the face of Anonymous. Overall I believe the short film was a huge success as it was everything that I wanted to imagine with the second series.
